   <title>Web Site : Site off-line since Mother&#039;s Day</title>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.k4tlh.net/forum//member_profile.asp?PF=1">WE4RA</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> Site off-line since Mother&#039;s Day<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 22 May 2008 at 22:04<br /><br />As most visitors to the site were aware, the site was&nbsp;down between Mother's Day, and May 20th.&nbsp; Also, the site has been up and down periodically since the evening of May 20th and now.<DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>The cause of the site's outage was due to a catastrophic disk failure, causing me to have to rebuild the server from scratch.&nbsp; Luckily, two days before the failure, a refurbished hard drive I bought from eBay arrived, or else the site may have been down longer.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>This is how it happened:</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>There was a 115-minute long power outage on my street the afternoon of May 11th (Mother's Day).&nbsp; I happened to be home when the power went out.&nbsp; The UPS kept the system up, and I gracefully shut down all my computer equipment.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>Commercial mains were restored at approx. 1:40 pm, and I turned on the server just prior to leaving to meet my mom for a Mother's Day get-together.&nbsp; Upon arriving back home, I really didn't give the server much thought, as I finished my laundry and went to bed.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>Monday was a busy day at work, and it wasn't until Tuesday morning that I noticed the server didn't boot.&nbsp; Several attempts to boot the server Tuesday morning failed.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>I brought all my cool diagnostic tools back home with me on Tuesday evening, and began troubleshooting the issue.&nbsp; Turns out, not only was the $MFT (master file table) corrupted, but the backup $MFTmir mirror copy was also trashed.&nbsp; No amount of CHKDSK-ing, partition rebuilding, MBR restoration, or data recovery routines would fix the issue.&nbsp; It was a format and re-install situation.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>So, over the weekend of the 17th - 18th, I began re-building the server.&nbsp; Since I hadn't used the media in a while, it took me several hours just to get all the media I needed rounded up.&nbsp; Unfortunately, some of the media had degraded over the years, and I had diffuculty even getting the NOS reinstalled.&nbsp; However, finally at around 11:30 pm on Sunday, I had a running box again.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>Over the next several evenings, I continued getting things returned to normal.&nbsp; Finally the site is back up.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>There are still some other things that I need to accomplish, such as restoring user accounts, and certain authoring accounts for people who help me maintain the site, and re-installing some apps like MySQL and PHP.&nbsp; However, the site should be fit for use for the most part.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>If you notice anything strange, please bring it to my attention so I can address it as quickly as possible.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>I apologize for any inconvenience, and thank you for your patience while I was unexpectedly rebuilding the server.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>73,</DIV><DIV>WE4RA</DIV>]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.k4tlh.net/forum//member_profile.asp?PF=5">W1FJI</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> Vacation<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 14 Nov 2007 at 09:39<br /><br /><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>It's interesting to note the following.</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><strong></strong>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>When Janet KA1BOF and I decided to fly up to Dartmouth, Ma this past October, I looked around to see what I wanted to take for ham radio equipment.&nbsp; In past years when I traveled, I would lug around my TS520, an MFJ antenna tuner, a long with a hunk of wire.&nbsp; When we got to where ever we were going I would roll out the wire, connect everything up and get on either cw or ssb.&nbsp; Later on when I bought the IC706MKII but then I would have to go out to the car and operate HF.&nbsp; That calls for running the car's motor and I was limited to how much gas I wanted to blow out the exhaust.&nbsp; </strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><strong></strong>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>This year was a bit different, I still have the ole IC706MKII, an MFJ tuner and some wire, then I would need a power supply to power the IC706MKII from inside.&nbsp; I didn't wanna lug all that equipment on and off the plane, so&nbsp;I really didn't want to go through that trouble.</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><strong></strong>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>I have an ole &nbsp;laptop, it has Echolink, CQ100, and software to get me to a HF remote base. So I grabbed the laptop and my HT and I was ready to travel. Upon arriving in Dartmouth, I set up the laptop, found a wireless connection, btw, I have no idea who's wireless connection I was into, never the less, I was in.&nbsp; I first tried Echolink and chatted with the locals back here in Tallahassee. Next I tried CQ100 and chatted with a few guys via that virtual route.&nbsp;&nbsp;Then I got back on the internet and connected to an HF remote base, from there was able to operate cw or ssb using an HF remote base.</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong></strong></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong></strong></FONT>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>If the wireless connection had gone away I would have had to find another one.&nbsp;&nbsp;Lets see, Starbucks, and many other places offer free wireless connections, and&nbsp; I'd have been right back in business.&nbsp; I played with ham radio while on vacation all week and had a blast.</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><strong></strong>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>Now wait a minute, what do ya mean that ain't ham radio, why not????</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><strong></strong>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>Geeeeezzzzz, ain't ham radio fun.</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><strong></strong>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><strong>73's,&nbsp; Art W1FJI</strong></FONT></DIV><DIV><FONT face=Arial><BR></FONT></DIV>]]>

    <![CDATA[<strong>Author:</strong> <a href="http://www.k4tlh.net/forum//member_profile.asp?PF=1">WE4RA</a><br /><strong>Subject:</strong> Recent outage<br /><strong>Posted:</strong> 02 Nov 2007 at 14:03<br /><br /><P>The site's recent week-long service disruption was caused by an electrical problem which caused AG4UR to begin testing all the circuit breakers in the panel before calling yours truly for help.&nbsp; Alas, the home office breaker was among the ones reset, which ultimately took the server offline.</P><DIV>The server is on an UPS, but I think too much time had&nbsp;passed before I received the first call from AG4UR, so it drained flat before power was restored.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>I worked with AG4UR over the phone to get the server turned back on, but it was an excerise&nbsp;of futility.&nbsp; Therefore, the server had to remain offline until my return this past Monday evening.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>It turns out the initial electrical problem that started all this is either with the home audio system or a receptacle on the circuit, and is somehow feeding the hot and neutral back into the circuit reversed, causing the circuit to fail, without tripping the breaker in the panel.&nbsp; It's kind of a wierd problem (because nothing has really changed in the room) that I'm still working to solve.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>In any event, I apologize the site was down so long.</DIV><DIV>&nbsp;</DIV><DIV>Oh yeah, I'll be labeling all the breakers in the electrical panel this weekend too. &nbsp;<img src="http://www.k4tlh.net/forum/smileys/smiley4.gif" height="17" width="17" border="0" align="absmiddle" alt="Big%20smile" /></DIV>]]>
