It's interesting to note the following.

When Janet KA1BOF and I decided to fly up to Dartmouth, Ma this past October, I looked around to see what I wanted to take for ham radio equipment.  In past years when I traveled, I would lug around my TS520, an MFJ antenna tuner, a long with a hunk of wire.  When we got to where ever we were going I would roll out the wire, connect everything up and get on either cw or ssb.  Later on when I bought the IC706MKII but then I would have to go out to the car and operate HF.  That calls for running the car's motor and I was limited to how much gas I wanted to blow out the exhaust.

This year was a bit different, I still have the ole IC706MKII, an MFJ tuner and some wire, then I would need a power supply to power the IC706MKII from inside.  I didn't wanna lug all that equipment on and off the plane, so I really didn't want to go through that trouble.

I have an ole  laptop, it has Echolink, CQ100, and software to get me to a HF remote base. So I grabbed the laptop and my HT and I was ready to travel. Upon arriving in Dartmouth, I set up the laptop, found a wireless connection, btw, I have no idea who's wireless connection I was into, never the less, I was in.  I first tried Echolink and chatted with the locals back here in Tallahassee. Next I tried CQ100 and chatted with a few guys via that virtual route.  Then I got back on the internet and connected to an HF remote base, from there was able to operate cw or ssb using an HF remote base.

If the wireless connection had gone away I would have had to find another one.  Lets see, Starbucks, and many other places offer free wireless connections, and  I'd have been right back in business.  I played with ham radio while on vacation all week and had a blast.

Now wait a minute, what do ya mean that ain't ham radio, why not????

Geeeeezzzzz, ain't ham radio fun.
