TRAINING ANNOUNCEMENT

The Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross (ARC) as an extension to the Citizen Corps, the Amateur Radio Emergency Service and the Tallahassee Amateur Radio Society sponsors periodic Amateur Radio License classes.  The Red Cross has scheduled the next Technician License class to start on January 9, 2008, and will run for 3 - 4 sessions.  As it stands now, we will meet Wednesday's from 6pm to 9pm with testing the first Tuesday in February.

You can sign up for classes on-line at http://www.tallytown.com/redcross/training.html.

Additional information for the classes can be found at http://www.tallytown.com/redcross/faqs/

The classes usually cover the necessary FCC rules & regulations, electronic theory, and operating practices  for the Technician Class Amateur Radio License.  The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) publication The ARRL Ham Radio License Manual, first edition, will be used as the study guide, and should be purchased before the class starts.  The cost of the book is around $25, plus tax and shipping.  You can order the text directly from the American Radio Relay League (1-888-277-5289).  You can also order the text from your favorite book store.  Books might be available free of charge for class attendees, courtesy of the Capital Area Chapter of the American Red Cross.

You can get more details about the class by looking at the Adobe Acrobat file located here.

The specific objective of these classes is to promote interest in Amateur Radio, and strengthen the emergency response capabilities of both the Tallahassee Amateur Radio Society, and the Capital Area Chapter of the ARC.  Even if you're not interested in emergency response communications, and just want to get an amateur radio license, or are intrigued by how radio works, you are more than welcome to attend the classes.

The training will be geared toward the entry-level Technician class amateur radio license, which has no Morse Code requirement.  Class time will be partitioned, however, and the Morse Code will be presented in the first portion of each class day.

The classes are open to the public, and are free of charge.

The Technician class license examination consists of 35 questions, and a 75% score or better is the passing grade.  You can also find the entire Technician class question pool, and associated diagrams further down the page.

There is a testing fee of $14 at the conclusion of the training, to cover the costs of examination materials and postage for sending in the results.  Attendees will be able to sit for an exam at the next regular testing session.  Information on testing sessions can be found here.

If you would like to get a head start on the the material, feel free to download this primer.  It is a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation.  OK, so you don't' have PowerPoint?  Then click here to view the presentation via your Internet Explorer browser.  Going through all the slides in one sitting will probably take a few hours.  The presentation consists of 240+ slides, so feel free to come back whenever you want, if you don't have PowerPoint installed on your computer.

The following question pools should also help you study for your exams.  These are Adobe Acrobat Reader files.  If you need the free Adobe Acrobat Reader software, follow the link from our Newsletter page to download it.
